Mother (マザー, Mazā), often called EarthBound Zero by fans, is a classic RPG and the first game in the Mother/EarthBound series. Many aspects of the game, most notably the quirky concepts seen within the game, have been the basis of the entire Mother series. It follows the adventures of a boy named Ninten, who is similar to Ness, as he fights to defeat the evil alien Giygas ("Giegue" in unreleased English version).

Music from Mother, namely "Bein' Friends" and "Pollyanna", are heard on the stage Onett in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Starmen, one of the main enemies in Mother appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy.

The Franklin Badge from Mother appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an item and a trophy. In addition, the main characters of Mother, Ninten, Lloyd, Ana, and Teddy appear in Brawl as stickers.
