Mindgames are the factor of play in the Super Smash Bros. series that involves outguessing the opponent. They are considered to be a counterpart to the player's technical skill. The correct usage of the term "mindgames," however, has come under question, especially in the light of a recent Smash World Forums thread titled "Mindgames don't exist: The Truth," in which the author declares that "the usage of the word is overly saturated and [it] doesn't even mean anything."

Examples of mindgames include such simple acts as wavedashing while your opponent is respawning to show your skill to much more advanced movements to make your opponent think that you will do something other than what you are showing. Of course, sometimes blatantly telegraphing your moves can be a mindgame in and of itself, especially if your opponent is convinced you'll do something other than what you're showing.

Mindgames are currently top criteria for high-tier characters.
